Teaching

The foundation of my teaching is built on establishing an identity, increasing the trajectory of the student, and enjoyment in what the student is doing.Identity explains a person’s characteristics and what they are known for. Identity is a very important aspect because it is very easy for young students of all levels to feel like they are just going through the motions, and not fully understand what they’ll want to eventually become or who they are. The first question I will present to every student is about the personal goals they are interested in accomplishing because having purpose behind anything is a solid foundation.  I will give suggestions of potential goals as well as examples of some of my goals to introduce to help understand a structured and positive mindset. Based on my own evaluation of the student, I will begin to formulate a plan on how to approach the uncertainties and encourage students to stray away from the habits that hinder them. Teachers are always learning just like students, which makes the process astounding.

Trajectory of the student is relevant because music teaches punctuality, detailed evaluation, accountability, and many other qualities that result in success. The lessons will focus on trumpet playing, however reminding the student about the same concepts that are applicable to the real world is monumental, and it is evidence that everything has a purpose. In order to succeed, one needs to be put in the position for success, and it takes one person to make that difference in someone.

Enjoyment is my final element of teaching. Currently, it is very easy to get absorbed into something that one doesn’t personally enjoy, because the established mentality over time is that people have to do what they have to do and that is just how it is. However, in my experience it has never been worth the time for something that is not enjoyable to anyone. Every person is able to make a conscious decision about what they want to do, so it doesn’t make sense for someone to torture themselves. Music classifies as entertainment, which is supposed to be enjoyable, but that doesn’t mean it is for everyone. This applies to the teacher as well because if they are not enjoying the time spent with the students, then it serves no purpose and the job can’t be performed to the best of their ability.

Music has changed my life entirely. It has inspired me to want to share that experience with others in hope that they can have something that they look forward to every single day. I also really enjoy seeing people accomplish their goals, because the joy that consumes them is truly inspiring and is what keeps me looking forward. The reciprocating support people share in this field is a big part of why it is what it is.
